After reports surfaced on Sveriges Radio, it has been revealed that Volkswagen and the major bank Goldman Sachs are hesitant about injecting new capital into Northvolt, raising red flags around the future of the battery manufacturer. Northvolt is reportedly in the midst of preparing a new issue valued at around 7.5 billion kronor, a move critical for its survival.
Matti Kataja, Northvolt's press chief, has refrained from confirming any support from Volkswagen, stating: "The financing round continues, and we will return with more information when it is finalized," indicating the uncertain state of negotiations.
Ekonomisk kris för Northvolt
Northvolt Labs AB, based in Västerås, is facing a significant financial crisis. According to Fredrik Olovsson (S), it's the owners who must take responsibility and act swiftly. The pressure is mounting as it becomes apparent that parts of the battery factory in Skellefteå will be closing, leading to layoffs.
Statsministern: Staten avstår från att bli delägare
In a recent press conference with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) addressed Northvolt's economic situation. "We are committed to making Sweden a great place for new technologies that are essential for the green transition. However, it is not currently on the table for the Swedish government to become a shareholder. The ball is entirely in the court of Northvolt's owners," he stated, adding to the sense of urgency surrounding the company's fate.
Tuffa tider för Northvolt
Northvolt is scrambling for survival, intensified further as it informed employees of pending layoffs and has now halted external assignments and business trips. There are rising concerns as more of Northvolt's debts are being sent to Kronofogden, reflecting the struggling company’s financial health.
Kommer lönerna drabbas?
Despite worries over potential missed payrolls, Kataja reassured employees that the next salary payment is not in jeopardy. However, financial experts suggest that Northvolt needs fresh capital urgently to avoid running aground completely. With the green revolution accelerating, stakeholders are closely watching if Volkswagen's potential involvement will indeed come through, possibly marking a pivotal moment for Northvolt in this critical juncture.
