KYIV – On December 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia's latest attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, describing it as "inhumane" and intentionally timed for Christmas.

The assault involved more than 70 missiles and over a hundred drones, resulting in one death and widespread power outages across the nation.

At approximately 5:30 AM local time, air raid sirens sounded in several regions, followed by reports that Russia had launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea.

"Putin deliberately chose Christmas to attack. What could be more inhumane?" Zelenskyy stated. This attack marked the 13th significant strike on Ukraine's energy system in the past year, a continued tactic by Russia as winter deepens.

While Ukrainian air defenses managed to down over 50 missiles, Zelenskyy acknowledged that some missiles struck their targets, leading to power cuts in multiple areas.

"Unfortunately, there are some hits. As of now, there are blackouts in several regions," he said.

Ukrainian energy company DTEK reported severe damage to thermal power plant equipment.

DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko expressed outrage, stating, "Denying light and warmth to millions of peace-loving people as they celebrate Christmas is depraved and evil." He called on international allies to bolster air defense support.

Engineers swiftly began repairs as regional authorities reported growing power issues.

Svitlana Onyshchuk, the head of Ivano-Frankivsk region, remarked, "Christmas morning has once again shown that nothing is sacred for the aggressor country." She noted the profound impact of the attack, occurring during one of the most significant religious holidays.

This Christmas marked the second year Ukraine officially celebrated December 25, having moved from the traditional January 7 observance as a symbolic rejection of Russian influence.
The attack predominantly focused on Dnipropetrovsk, where Governor Sergiy Lysak highlighted Russia's efforts to undermine the energy grid.

Unfortunately, one casualty was confirmed in this area. Prior to Christmas, a separate strike in Kryvyi Rig resulted in one death and 17 injuries.

Additionally, Russian forces launched 12 missiles targeting Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, hitting crucial infrastructure including boiler houses and thermal power plants.

Four individuals were injured, and heating was disrupted for portions of the city. Local authorities evacuated 46 people from vulnerable areas while Russian troops regrouped to reclaim territory near Kupiansk, which had been liberated by Ukraine in September 2022.

Despite these ongoing threats, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to those defending the nation.

"I am thankful to everyone working for the country, who protects our air, and those brave souls on combat duty. Russian evil will not break Ukraine and will not ruin Christmas," he declared, signaling a resolve and determination amid despair.

As the conflict continues, international support remains crucial for Ukraine to withstand these attacks and prevent further damage to infrastructure during the harsh winter months.

Zelenskyy's message during this Christmas serves as a reminder of both the ongoing struggle and the resilience of the Ukrainian spirit in the face of adversity.
