Zelenskyy Claims Ukraine is 'Closer to the End of the War' Amid Ongoing Tensions with Russia

2024-09-24

In recent remarks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism regarding the resolution of the ongoing conflict with Russia, stating that Ukraine is "closer to the end of the war." This statement was made during an interview with ABC News, with excerpts released on September 23.

Zelenskyy articulated his belief that peace is more attainable than previously thought. He emphasized the necessity for continued support from Washington and other international allies, highlighting the devastating impact of the Russian invasion that began in February 2022, which has led to countless casualties and displace millions of Ukrainians.

During the interview, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine must approach negotiations from a "strong position" to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the conflict. He arrived in the United States for the UN General Assembly, where he advocated for a united effort towards achieving "a shared victory for a truly just peace."

Since the start of the invasion, the U.S. and its allies have allocated a multi-billion dollar assistance package to Ukraine and imposed numerous sanctions on Moscow in an effort to weaken Russia's military capabilities.

However, the situation remains tense as Putin has suggested that peace talks will only commence if Ukraine relinquishes significant territories in the east and south, along with abandoning its NATO aspirations. Conversely, Zelenskyy has continuously demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces and the full restoration of Ukraine's borders as they existed after the Soviet Union's dissolution.

In a notable tactical move, Ukraine launched a cross-border operation into Russia's western Kursk region on August 6, aimed partly at preventing any potential Russian assaults into Ukrainian territory. Zelenskyy remarked that this operation has instilled fear in Putin, asserting, "He's afraid very much because his people saw that he can't defend all his territory."

Both Ukraine and Western leaders have characterized Russia's actions as an imperial-style war, while Putin has framed the invasion as a necessary defense against a perceived aggressive Western threat. As the conflict continues, the international community watches closely, with hopes that diplomatic solutions may soon be reached.
