In a bold move to shake up the mobile tech industry, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun unveiled the Xring O1 mobile processor, a groundbreaking chip designed to power the company's flagship devices. This exciting announcement was made during a presentation on May 22, and it marks a significant step in Xiaomi's ambition to challenge American tech giants like Apple and Qualcomm.
Jun disclosed that Xiaomi is determined to enhance its technology portfolio, directly aiming to penetrate the lucrative Chinese market currently dominated by Apple. The Xring O1 is set to debut in at least three new devices, including the eagerly anticipated Xiaomi Tablet 7 Ultra and the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone.
"We aspire to become a leading chip manufacturer, challenging the iPhone with our own devices. But can our chips really stack up against Apple's?" Jun queried during the presentation.
While Jun acknowledged that the current iteration of the Xring O1 has some performance gaps compared to Apple’s offerings, he proclaimed that this development is a monumental leap for Xiaomi. The chip is crafted using TSMC's cutting-edge 3nm N3E technology and features a formidable 10-core architecture, which includes two powerful Cortex-X925 cores clocked at 3.9GHz, alongside six Cortex-A725 cores and two Cortex-A520 cores.
Notably, the Xring O1 supports advanced features such as LPDDR5T RAM, UFS 4.1 storage, USB 3.2 Gen2, and Wi-Fi 7. With a staggering score of over 3 million in the AnTuTu benchmark test, the chip outperforms the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Impressively, it also notched up over 3,000 points in single-core performance and more than 9,000 points in Geekbench 6 multi-core tests, even surpassing Apple’s A18 Pro in multi-core metrics.
As Xiaomi intensifies its push into robotics and electric vehicles, the spotlight was also on the brand's forthcoming electric crossover, the Xiaomi YU7, announced during the same event. This new model aims to make its market debut in July 2025, although preliminary details like pre-order dates and pricing remain under wraps.
With recent challenges surrounding its SU7 electric vehicle, which suffered a tragic incident leading to plummeting sales and stock values, Xiaomi is working hard to restore consumer trust. The unveiling of the Xring O1 is not just a technological feat but also a pivotal moment for the company’s comeback strategy.
