As we move into 2025, the world of action cameras continues to thrive, showcasing innovative advancements from brands like Insta360 and GoPro, each competing for the top spot in image quality and performance. Yet, even amidst this fierce competition, I find myself repeatedly reaching for my trusted DJI Action 2, a camera that first hit the market in 2021. Its combination of design, functionality, and portability has kept it firmly in my kit, even after four years.

During a recent press trip, I was pleasantly surprised by the reactions of my fellow tech enthusiasts. Instead of the anticipated skepticism about my choice to stick with an older model, I was met with awe and curiosity. Comments like “What is that? It looks so cool” and “Wow, I forgot how small the Action 2 was” confirmed that this camera’s sleek design and compactness continue to capture attention.

A Design Ahead of Its Time

The design of the DJI Action 2 is strikingly modern and minimalist—almost reminiscent of something Apple might produce. Encased in a sleek metal shell, it's a refreshing departure from the conventional ruggedized designs often associated with action cameras. Despite its elegance, the Action 2 is still incredibly durable. I've put it through rigorous tests, including attaching it to FPV drones and crash-landing it onto concrete, with only minor signs of wear.

One of the standout features of this camera is its modular design. At just 4cm x 4cm and weighing a mere 56 grams, it’s significantly lighter than its competitors—like the DJI Action 5 Pro (146 grams) and GoPro Hero 13 Black (159 grams). This compact size not only makes it easily portable but also enables unique placement options, particularly for POV shots, where it’s discreet yet effective.

Capturing Stunning Footage with Ease

The Action 2 excels in producing high-quality images. While it may not be the absolute pinnacle of image performance, it still delivers impressive results, especially in well-lit conditions. It captures 4K video at up to 120fps in a 16:9 ratio and also offers a robust 'D-Cinelike' color profile that provides some scope for post-production adjustments.

One of my personal favorites is the ultra-wide field of view it offers. Dubbed "Ultra Wide," this mode produces noticeably wider footage compared to GoPro's "HyperView," and does so with minimal distortion. This makes it particularly advantageous for capturing dynamic scenes, such as bike rides through scenic parks, where the resulting footage feels more epic than reality.

What Needs Improvement?

While my fondness for the Action 2 runs deep, I acknowledge that it does have its shortcomings. Notable among them is the overheating issue; the camera can heat up significantly, especially during stationary recording sessions. However, in action scenarios, especially when exposed to airflow, it tends to perform adequately. An upgraded chip for better thermal management would enhance its allure significantly.

Another area for improvement is low-light performance. The camera's current sensor falls behind those found in newer models, and an upgrade to a larger sensor could elevate low-light capabilities significantly. Connectivity is another area for consideration; direct compatibility with DJI's wireless microphones would streamline workflows, and perhaps even the addition of 10-bit color and a LOG profile would cater to more advanced users.

What's Next for DJI Action Cameras?

Since the launch of the DJI Action 2, the brand has shifted towards models featuring a more traditional action camera style, and while rumors of a new 360-degree camera abound, suggestions of a direct successor to the Action 2 have remained scarce. However, the ongoing availability of the Action 2 on platforms like DJI's UK site and Amazon hints that the company still sees value in this unique offering.

For now, I'll continue using my trusty Action 2. Unless a new device emerges that combines its compact size with superior image quality, I suspect my relationship with this remarkable camera will endure.

Why the DJI Action 2 is a Game Changer for Action Enthusiasts

If you’re considering an action camera, the DJI Action 2’s innovative design and impressive capabilities make it a compelling choice even four years after its launch.
