The biggest gains occur before reaching 7,000, after which benefits tend to plateau." He estimates that these 7,000 steps equate to about an hour of walking throughout the day.

Dempsey encourages those who might feel overwhelmed by aiming for 7,000 steps: "If you're currently averaging around 2,000 to 3,000 steps, strive to incorporate an additional 1,000 steps into your day—that’s just 10 to 15 minutes of light walking spread across your routine."

Andrew Scott, a researcher at the University of Portsmouth and not involved in the study, added, "This research underscores that more activity is always beneficial. It's important not to get too fixated on the numbers, especially on less active days."
