This surge in violence was triggered by the earlier arrest of two 14-year-old boys, accused of a serious sexual assault on a teenager in the area.

The boys, who faced charges interpreted in court via a Romanian interpreter, denied the allegations. However, the situation in Ballymena escalated, leading police to consider the damage inflicted as racially motivated due to the town's significant migrant population.

Fear gripped the community as two Filipino families shared their harrowing experience after fleeing their home when their car was set ablaze outside their house. These acts of violence have made residents increasingly anxious about their safety.

On Wednesday evening, a handful of masked youths clashed with police, hurling rocks, fireworks, and petrol bombs as officers in riot gear worked to contain the situation. Police deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd—an action reminiscent of the previous night, which resulted in injuries to 17 officers and multiple arrests.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that swimming classes were ongoing when the chaos erupted, with staff forced to barricade themselves in before escaping through the back door to safety.

In response to the escalating violence, Northern Ireland's Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons, issued a statement on Facebook acknowledging the temporary relocation of families seeking refuge at the leisure center, a comment that drew sharp criticism from political opponents for inadvertently exposing vulnerable families to danger.
