Challenges Ahead
Norwegian golfing sensation Viktor Hovland heads into the 2025 PGA Tour season with a unique match-up of challenges—a broken toe and the absence of a dedicated swing coach. As he prepares for The Sentry, the much-anticipated season opener in picturesque Kapalua, Hawaii, Hovland's status remains uncertain.
Coaching Changes
In a recent interview with Norsk Golf, the 27-year-old confirmed his split from swing coach Joe Mayo for the second time within a year. Hovland first parted ways with Mayo in late 2023, only to rehire him in the spring of 2024 as he explored various coaching styles. However, just a month ago, he decided to go his separate way once again.
"To be honest, we disagreed a bit about the way forward and what would be best for my game," Hovland explained. “I feel like I've gained a wealth of knowledge and expertise that enables me to take control of my own swing. While I occasionally send videos to another coach for feedback, he primarily acts as a consultant, allowing me to take charge."
Injury Woes
As a remarkable six-time PGA Tour winner and currently ranked No. 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Hovland has been inactive in competition since September due to undisclosed injuries. The recent injury occurred in Hawaii when he accidentally broke his right little toe after a restless night of sleep in his hotel room.
The incident happened when he jostled awake in the middle of the night, still dressed, and tried to get up but kicked the corner of the bed. He shared X-ray images of his injury on Instagram, showcasing the severity of the mishap. According to Hovland, the expected healing time for the toe is four to six weeks, yet he hasn't withdrawn from The Sentry just yet.
"I've hit a few balls, although without shoes and without putting any weight on my right foot," he mentioned. "I'm already feeling a significant decrease in pain compared to yesterday. I have a few days to make a decision, and I’m planning to stay on the starting list for now."
The Competition
On another note, the competition is fierce at The Sentry; already, fans were shocked to learn that World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is out of the tournament due to a freak accident where he cut his hand while cooking Christmas dinner, requiring surgery to remove glass shards from his palm.
Looking Ahead
With the season kicking off soon, all eyes will be on Hovland to see if he can overcome his injury and coaching changes to reclaim his spot at the top of the sports world. Will he surprise fans and competitors alike? Stay tuned!
