California-based company Vast Space is setting its sights high with plans to launch the Haven-2, a groundbreaking commercial space station equipped with artificial gravity, into low Earth orbit by 2028. CEO Max Haot emphasizes the long-term goal, explaining, “We know that living in weightlessness has its limits. However, if we can simulate lunar or Martian gravity, we could enable human habitation in space for much longer. The only way to find out is by constructing stations with artificial gravity.”

Founded in 2021 by entrepreneur Jed McCaleb, known for creating the peer-to-peer networks eDonkey and Overnet, Vast Space is also making strides in partnership with SpaceX. The company recently announced plans for two missions to the ISS, which are essential milestones in its pathway to launching its first station, Haven-1, by 2025. Vast Space is looking to engage with NASA’s Commercial Destinations in Low Earth Orbit (CLD) program, which was initiated with a $415 million grant aimed at promoting the development of commercial stations. While the company currently has no contracts with NASA, it aims to showcase its capabilities ahead of competitors, hoping to secure backing when NASA announces its decision in the second half of 2026.

Design and Features of Haven-1

Haven-1 will feature a habitable volume of 45 cubic meters, equipped with a docking port, living quarters, a laboratory, and advanced communication technology using Starlink laser links. While it won’t cater to tourism or leisure activities, Haot notes that Haven-1 will offer unique amenities suitable for professional astronauts or private individuals conducting essential research.

Prospects for Haven-2

After the Haven-1 mission, the company is optimistic about the prospects for Haven-2, which will be modular and significantly larger. Haot mentioned, “The first module is set for 2028, providing NASA two years for assessment while the ISS remains operational. The design will include improved docking capabilities and a larger living space, accommodating more astronauts.”

Plans for Artificial Gravity Testing

As they develop their technology, tests for artificial gravity will commence; however, the final station will still need to adhere to NASA's regulations for weightlessness during initial operations. “We plan to conduct gravity simulations on Haven-1 for three years until 2028, striving towards our goal of artificial gravity,” Haot added.

Notably, Vast Space's ambitions rest on an emerging commercial market, one that has largely been dominated by governmental agencies. Haot is confident, stating, "Our designs promise to reduce costs significantly—potentially fivefold—making this vision feasible."
