Parents in the south west of England are being strongly advised to ensure their children receive measles vaccinations after alarming new data indicates a significant rise in cases.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports that the region is currently grappling with a staggering 46% of all measles cases across the country between December 16 and January 13.

In just under a month, there were 30 new measles diagnoses in the south west, contributing to a total of 115 confirmed cases over the past year.

Bristol has reported the highest incidence, with 57 cases recorded since January 1, 2024.

This is closely followed by Gloucestershire, with 23 cases, and Somerset, reporting 11.

Dr. Alasdair Wood, a consultant in health protection for the UKHSA, expressed grave concerns about the situation.

He stated, "Measles is highly infectious, and it can lead to serious complications or even death in rare cases."

With vaccination rates for the recommended two doses dropping below the crucial 90% threshold, experts warn that this decline could pave the way for even more outbreaks.

The data reveals that measles has been actively spreading across the country, notably peaking in the south west during November and December.

Dr. Wood emphasized, "This more rapid rise in cases within the region is concerning."

Notably, symptoms of measles include cold-like symptoms, sore red eyes, a high fever, and a characteristic red-brown blotchy rash.

People infected with measles can spread the virus four days before and four days after the rash appears, greatly amplifying the risk of transmission.

The report stresses that certain groups are at higher risk of severe infection, including pregnant women, children younger than one year, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Dr. Wood concluded, "We all have a responsibility to protect these vulnerable populations. Vaccination is the best way to reduce the spread of measles."

As the threat of measles increases, parents are urged to take immediate action and ensure that their children's vaccinations are up to date.

Remember, prevention is better than cure! Don’t let your child become another statistic!
