SINGAPORE — A shocking revelation from traffic police indicates that under 10% of lorries required to have speed limiters will meet the compliance deadline early next year. With just months to go, lorry owners are faced with potential penalties and safety concerns that cannot be ignored.
Since January of last year, lorries weighing between 3,501kg and 12,000kg have mandated speed limiters that keep speeds capped at a crucial 60 km/h. Despite more than 17,000 eligible vehicles needing these devices, fewer than 300 have been fitted.
The clock is ticking for companies operating older trucks, especially those registered before January 1, 2018. They have until January 1, 2026, to comply—while those with lighter loads must adapt by July 1, 2026.
Superintendent Lian Weixiong raised alarms about the slim uptake of speed limiters, noting that with only 231 of the 2,600 lorries hit by the first deadline having installed the devices, the situation looks dire. Many companies are adopting a ‘wait-and-see’ attitude, dangerously underestimating the timeline.
Lian emphasized that early installation has benefits beyond compliance; it ensures road safety for drivers and others alike. Increased speeding penalties set to take effect in 2026 mean that companies could face hefty fines, demerit points, and the risk of suspended licenses for their drivers if they delay.
Installation of a speed limiter can be quick—taking about 30 minutes—but the costs vary, ranging from a few hundred up to over S$1,000 (around US$777) depending on the model. This investment can ultimately save companies money in the long run, not to mention lives.
As the deadline looms closer, businesses must recognize the operational advantages of compliance. Will they take action before it’s too late?
