In an exclusive chat, we spoke with Helgi Freyr Rúnarsson and Guðlaugur Jóhannesson, two software engineers at CCP Games with impressive academic credentials. Rúnarsson, who specializes in computational astrophysics, leads the project’s world generation and resource design. Jóhannesson, equally qualified with a PhD in astrophysics, focuses on developing the game’s physics and back-end systems.

The Science Behind the Adventure

One of the most exciting aspects of EVE Frontier is its incorporation of advanced simulations. Rúnarsson revealed the team uses the Barnes-Hut algorithm to simulate the merging of three galaxies, allowing players to explore and conquer this dynamic universe.

"We implement a full-scale version of the Barnes-Hut algorithm, generating the galaxies with the Hernquist prescription, a method that dates back to the 80s," Rúnarsson stated. This approach ensures an engaging gameplay experience while keeping scientific accuracy in check.

Crafting a Unique Resource

Center to the gameplay is a mysterious substance known as 'crude,' mined from rifts within the EVE universe. This unstable yet energy-rich material fuels player spacecraft and connects to a theoretical 'Stillness' that enables faster-than-light travel.

Interestingly, Jóhannesson originally pitched using dark matter as fuel. However, its well-understood nature didn’t lend itself to exciting gameplay, prompting the shift toward the enigmatic crude.

While the developers strive for a realistic depiction of the universe, some scientific principles had to be bent for gameplay's sake. For instance, despite a physicist's desire for accurate spaceship physics, players are granted certain liberties, ensuring a fun experience over absolute realism.

Rúnarsson explained, "We had to compromise on aspects like speed; gameplay enjoyment often trumps scientific precision. Our universe introduces friction, allowing for engaging dogfighting and exploration."
