For the first time in 15 years, Saturn will be visible to the naked eye this weekend, shining brightly in the southern sky. Astronomy Ireland is preparing giant telescopes to offer stargazers an unparalleled view of the ringed planet, which will be nearly edge-on—a rare alignment that enhances its beauty.

David Moore, a noted astronomer, declares, "Seeing Saturn through our telescopes is a transformative experience. What appears as a mere dot to the naked eye becomes a magnificent globe, adorned with cloud belts and stunning rings!" He also highlights that viewers might catch a glimpse of up to six of Saturn's elusive moons, which are normally too faint to detect without powerful equipment.

Mark your calendars! Astronomy Ireland is hosting a special event at the GAA Grounds in Roundwood, Co Wicklow, this Saturday from 4 PM. Renowned speakers, including BBC's Dr. George Dransfield and DCU's Prof. Oisin Creaner, will be present to make this occasion even more memorable.

As if Saturn's appearance wasn’t thrilling enough, Venus will also be in the spotlight. This dazzling planet will briefly vanish behind the moon on Friday afternoon, but not without giving eager stargazers a chance to catch it in action! From around 12:40 to 12:45 PM and again from 2:00 to 2:05 PM, Venus will take center stage, appearing just to the side of the moon.

Moore advises viewers on how to catch this daylight phenomenon: "Stand in the shadows of a building to shield your eyes from the sun. Then, look about twice your handspan away from the sun to the right to spot the moon and Venus." You won’t want to miss this fleeting celestial dance!
