At Texas A&M University, Dr. Bernard and her team are uncovering the essential role of the cerebellum, an area once thought to only regulate balance and movement. New research reveals its significant influence on memory and cognitive functions.

Understanding Cognitive Decline

As we age, the cerebellum can suffer—nerve cells might stop functioning or fade away, impacting our ability to think and move.

"We measure cognitive fitness through a variety of methods, assessing structural and functional brain changes as individuals age," says Dr. Bernard.

A Groundbreaking Study

Currently, Bernard is at the helm of a pivotal two-year study backed by the WoodNext Foundation. This research involves 120 participants categorized into three distinct groups: young healthy adults, cognitively normal older adults, and older adults showing early signs of cognitive decline.

"Our young adults set a benchmark for optimal cognitive performance. In older adults, we can observe normal age-related forgetfulness, but those with mild cognitive impairment face more significant challenges—affecting their independence and daily activities," Dr. Bernard explains.

A Revolutionary Intervention: Theta Burst Stimulation

The study is not just about memory tests. It investigates the synergy between thinking and movement, which directly influences daily living tasks. The key intervention under investigation is Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS)—a cutting-edge form of transcranial magnetic stimulation designed to synchronize brain rhythms and improve cognitive function.

Dr. Bernard is hopeful that TBS could enhance behavioral capabilities and fortify brain networks, especially for individuals facing cognitive decline.

Beyond Aging: A Broader Focus

Dr. Bernard's research extends beyond aging. Collaborating with experts, she also examines how brain changes during pregnancy influence the relationship between first-time mothers and their babies. This groundbreaking work will provide deeper insights into maternal mental health and assist new mothers in navigating their parenting journey.

The overarching goal of Dr. Bernard's diverse projects is simple yet profound: to empower people to live more fulfilling, independent lives, whether by preserving precious memories or enhancing maternal wellbeing.

"Our studies take a comprehensive view of the brain—its structure, function, and care. Working alongside a dedicated team from various disciplines, we’re paving the way for innovative approaches to age-related decline and brain health management," she concludes.
