Navigating Job Loss in Singapore

In a surprising shake-up, Michelle Tan (name changed) found herself jobless after being informed her preschool role would go to someone cheaper. The blow to her confidence was immediate, but she took action by seeking help from the National Trades Union Congress’ Employment and Employability Institute (e2i). With guidance from her career coach, she’s reworking her resume and preparing for a fresh start.

Exciting New Scheme Launching April 15!

Starting April 15, job seekers like Michelle can tap into the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme—an incredible opportunity specifically designed for lower- and middle-income Singaporeans who have lost employment due to layoffs, closures, or unforeseen circumstances. This scheme was announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during his inaugural National Day Rally address in August 2024.

How to Qualify and What to Expect

To apply, Michelle needs to submit her official termination letter and details of her former employer for verification via the updated online portal. Once approved, she can engage in various job search activities to earn points towards temporary financial support.

Earn Up to $6,000 by Getting Active!

The scheme offers job seekers the chance to earn points through activities like networking, attending workshops, and even job interviews, with potential payouts reaching up to $6,000 over six months. As shared by NTUC's Ng Chee Meng, this initiative offers crucial financial relief during uncertain times.

Get Involved: Activities to Earn Points!

At a recent media briefing, Workforce Singapore (WSG) revealed 13 exciting activities job seekers can engage in to rack up points. From using the CareersFinder tool to applying for job attachments, the more effort you put in, the more points you can earn. For instance, attending career coaching nets you four points, while simply reading relevant content gives you one.

Track Your Progress and Keep It Going!

To qualify for payouts, participants must earn at least 10 points in the first three months, tapering down to five points in the last three months. With a comprehensive dashboard to track activities and earnings, those who persist can carry excess points into the next month.

Who's Eligible?

To participate, individuals aged 21 and above must have been unemployed for at least a month, with certain income and property value criteria in play. Initial monthly payouts start at $1,500, reducing over time but capped at their previous salary's average.

A Step Towards Recovery

Currently available for Singapore citizens, the scheme will extend to permanent residents in 2026, offering much-needed support for those looking to reclaim their careers. For anyone needing help with the application process, WSG’s ambassadors are ready to assist across various locations.

With this new scheme, job seekers can embrace a pathway towards new opportunities and financial assistance, igniting hope for a brighter future!
