Starting September 5, the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) invites you to step into a world of fun, culture, and competition with its exciting new exhibit, 'Let’s Play! The Art And Design Of Asian Games.' This unique showcase features over 150 artifacts, including life-size games that tell the story of beloved Asian pastimes like chess, weiqi, and mahjong.

Not only can you admire historical pieces, but you can also engage with various games in dynamic communal spaces designed for play. Team up against robots or challenge friends to classic games while discovering how these age-old traditions have evolved into modern-day favorites, complete with digital interactives!

Exhibit highlights include the fascinating origins of games like chess, which traces back to ancient India as 'chaturanga,' a military strategy game symbolizing different army divisions. This centuries-old game journeyed to Persia, evolving into the modern chess we know today.

It doesn’t stop there! Each game in the exhibit, from weiqi to mahjong, showcases how these activities were not just for entertainment but served educational and moral purposes, underscoring virtues and life lessons. For example, the Indian game gyan chaupar, the precursor to Snakes and Ladders, taught players about morality through its depiction of virtues and vices.

The exhibit also highlights the modern face of gaming, showcasing how technology such as artificial intelligence has transformed traditional games into competitive arenas, evidenced by AlphaGo's historic win over a Go champion.
