Spotting the Red Flags

Navigating the job market can feel like walking through a minefield, especially when it comes to deciphering job listings. In a recent episode of the "Work It" podcast, host Tiffany Ang and guest Han Lee, a director at Lico Resources, delved into the unsaid truths behind job descriptions.

Are Those Requirements Set in Stone?

Tiffany kicked off the conversation with a burning question: "Do I really need to have five to seven years of experience to apply?" Han's response was an emphatic no. He explained that job descriptions often read like a wish list from employers.

"You don’t have to be the perfect candidate. When I consult with clients, I always ask, 'What is absolutely necessary? And what’s just good to have?'" Han shared. It’s common for most candidates to only meet about 60-70% of the requirements listed. This doesn’t mean you should shy away from applying; in fact, Han encourages it!

The Mystery of Endless Job Postings

The conversation took an intriguing turn as Gerald Tan, another host, raised a concern about deceptive job postings. "What about those listings that seem fake, just there to collect resumes?" he asked.

Tiffany echoed this sentiment, confused about the reason behind companies hoarding resumes. Han clarified that many organizations often interview candidates before official budget approvals. Sometimes, they’re merely preparing for future needs, leading to repeated postings of the same job.

Your Application Could Lead to Opportunity!

So what does this mean for you? Don’t let hesitation hold you back! If you find yourself 60-70% aligned with a job description, take the leap and apply. Companies are frequently willing to train the right person, and you never know where that application could lead.
