WASHINGTON, March 12 — In an extraordinary move that has left many questioning the boundaries of political endorsements, President Donald Trump transformed the White House into an impromptu showroom for Tesla vehicles yesterday. Standing beside his close associate and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, he declared his intention to buy a Tesla as a show of solidarity, amidst plummeting stock values for the electric car maker.
This unusual endorsement comes on the heels of a significant decline in Tesla's share prices, which have been affected by market concerns surrounding Trump's tariffs and escalating criticism of Musk's controversial political engagements. Despite these challenges, Musk remains optimistic, announcing plans to double Tesla production in the U.S. over the next two years, signaling his resolve to keep the company at the forefront of the electric vehicle market.
"I said, 'Elon, I don’t like what’s happening to you, and Tesla’s a great company,'" Trump shared with the press, positioned in front of a gleaming red Tesla on the White House's south portico. "He has built this great company, and he shouldn’t be penalized because he’s a patriot.”
After taking office, Trump delegated the responsibility of major cost cuts for government initiatives to Musk, who has been leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, this endeavour has sparked resistance, leading to protests, legal challenges, and pressure from lawmakers, which have tarnished Tesla's brand reputation.
Sales have faltered, particularly in Europe, where they have drastically dropped due to Musk's polarizing stance on political issues. Some Tesla owners have even displayed stickers on their cars voicing their dissatisfaction, noting they purchased before Musk’s perceived erratic behavior began.
In a stark warning to protesters opposing Musk, Trump stated, "You do it to Tesla and you do it to any company, we’re going to catch you and you’re going to go through hell." His remarks on potential labeling of protesters as "domestic terrorists" have stirred substantial controversy.
Musk, buoyed by Trump’s backing, remarked that Tesla’s growth in the U.S. is a testament to the "great policies" from the administration. He announced that production of a futuristic self-driving "cyber-cab" will begin in Texas next year, aiming to innovate with vehicles without traditional controls.
Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express his support for Musk, encouraging Americans to see the billionaire as a champion of progress. "To Republicans, Conservatives, and all great Americans, Elon Musk is ‘putting it on the line’ in order to help our Nation," he proclaimed.
However, despite Trump's overt support, public sentiment appears to be against Musk, with polls indicating low approval ratings for the CEO among Americans. His push for government cuts has generated discontent within the Republican base, further complicating his relationship with constituents.
Amidst this turmoil, Tesla's stock appears to be rebounding, having seen a slight recovery after dropping dramatically previously. Nonetheless, the company faces challenges internationally, particularly in Europe, where sales have sharply declined following Musk's public backing of controversial political parties. In February alone, Tesla sales in Germany plummeted over 76% compared to the previous year, with ongoing reports of vandalism against Tesla vehicles and facilities.
As tensions rise and the situation develops, the future of Tesla and its leadership remains uncertain, closely tied to the fluctuations of political support and public sentiment surrounding Musk and his ambitious ventures.
