A Sporting Legend Gone Too Soon

SINGAPORE — Tragedy struck the sports community as national shooter Guy Hoh passed away at the age of 51 after a valiant fight against cancer on August 29. Known for his dedication to the sport and immense talent, Hoh was poised to represent Singapore at the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok.

A Hero in the Face of Adversity

Hoh’s journey with illness began in his mid-thirties when he was first diagnosed with leukemia. After surviving a relapse in 2014, his battles continued, culminating in a diagnosis of appendix cancer earlier this year, which tragically spread to his lungs despite his relentless spirit to train.

A Promising Sea Games Participation

Earlier this August, Hoh was shortlisted alongside four other national athletes for the men’s compak sporting event, a thrilling shotgun discipline involving clay pigeon shooting. This marked a significant milestone, as it would have been his debut at the SEA Games.

A Passion for Shooting That Knew No Bounds

Colleagues and friends remember Hoh as a passionate advocate for the sport. Three-time Olympic shooter Lee Wung Yew reflected on their three-decade friendship, emphasizing Hoh’s infectious enthusiasm and positivity. "He's one of the few people in Singapore where his love for shooting has no bounds," Mr. Lee remarked.

Contributions Beyond Competition

Hoh’s influence extended far beyond the competitive scene. A dedicated coach since 1994, he guided young minds in the art of shooting, even helping one young shooter qualify for her first SEA Games. Additionally, he established himself as a business entrepreneur, founding Southeast Asia’s only hunting agency, catering to guided hunts and safari adventures.
