Farewell to a Quiet Force in Politics
In a heartbreaking loss for the political landscape of Singapore, Anthony Lee Yung Hwee, the former Assistant Secretary General of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP), has passed away after a brave battle with cancer. His dedication to his work and his vision for a united opposition will leave a significant legacy that many may not fully understand.
A Humble Mentor and Encourager
Lee, a figure who preferred the background yet played a critical role in fostering change within Singapore's political scene, was instrumental in the establishment of the PSP. Many knew him as a quiet yet effective force, and he was not only dedicated to the party’s mission but also to mentoring others. I first encountered Anthony in 2019 when the PSP was making its debut, where he, alongside Michael Chua, strongly encouraged my participation in the party. A memorable encounter was my interview with him for PSP’s Coffee Table book following the 2020 General Elections. Unfortunately, due to editorial decisions, that interview never saw the light of day.
Vision and Influence
During our conversation, Lee spoke passionately about his role in persuading Dr. Tan Cheng Bock to launch the PSP and how he aimed to unite various opposition factions. He claimed significant influence in recruiting notable figures like Lee Hsien Yang to the party, though the exact dynamics during the founding phase have sparked differing narratives. While some in the founding Central Executive Committee (CEC) disputed his claim as the sole architect behind the party’s inception, there’s no denying that Lee's stature as the first Assistant Secretary General illustrated his trusted relationship with Dr. Tan.
A Bold Vision for West Coast GRC
One of Lee’s bold insights was identifying the West Coast Group Representation Constituency (GRC) as vulnerable, largely due to his perception of then-Minister S. Iswaran's effectiveness. He aspired to lead a challenge against this GRC, believing that with Dr. Tan’s leadership, success was all but guaranteed. Nevertheless, his ambitions to contest in this area were redirected as the party saw rapid growth and attracted prominent talents like Leong Mun Wai and Francis Yeun. As a result, Anthony stepped back from his assistant secretary role, which left him feeling a bit disheartened.
A Legacy of Commitment
Despite these challenges, Lee remained a valuable asset by managing the logistics for GE2020, turning his office in Pandan Loop into a hub for party materials. Many cherished moments were spent over coffee as he shared his insights and plans during those busy campaigning days.
Remembering Anthony Lee
After the 2020 elections, Lee took a quieter approach, stepping back from his active involvement in party affairs. However, his efforts and contributions should never be overlooked. He may have left us, but his spirit and vision will continue to inspire those in the PSP and beyond.
Final Farewell
While we mourn his departure, let us remember Anthony Lee not just as a politician, but as a dedicated individual who fought passionately for change in Singapore. In honor of his life, a wake for Anthony Lee will be held at Void Deck @ 103 Clementi Street 14, Singapore 120103. Rest in peace, Anthony. Your legacy will not be forgotten.
