Introduction
In Singapore, the challenges of caring for the elderly are real and can be daunting for many, including domestic workers. Take for instance Eillen Rose, a Filipina maid caring for her employer's wife, who struggles with dementia and diabetes. Previously overwhelmed by her responsibilities, Ms. Rose was anxious about administering medication and performing essential diabetes management tasks, like blood tests.
However, everything changed when she participated in a training session offered by SingHealth Polyclinics (SHP). This enlightening course equipped her with critical skills essential for managing her employer's health. Ms. Rose learned to create balanced meals better suited to a diabetic diet, such as limiting carbohydrate intake to ensure her employer's well-being. She excitedly shared, “If I give her bread in the morning, it must be only one piece, because if it's two pieces, then that equals one bowl of rice.”
Comprehensive Training
The insightful three-hour course, conducted by registered nurses, provided both theoretical knowledge and practical insights. Participants learned about various crucial aspects, including dietary management, exercise routines, medication handling, and the operation of monitoring devices for blood pressure and blood glucose levels.
This training initiative by SHP follows a survey conducted last year, which revealed that over 40% of helpers felt uncertain about monitoring blood pressure and glucose levels, and nearly 35% were apprehensive about managing medications. This gap is critical, especially since over 80% of seniors aged 65 and above deal with at least one chronic condition such as diabetes or hypertension.
In just four months, SHP organized five free training sessions at polyclinics in Tampines and Bukit Merah. More than 60 domestic workers participated, including Ms. Rose, along with around 20 employers. Plans are in motion to expand this essential training to all SHP polyclinics.
Innovative Training Approach
In a bid to enhance access to training, SHP has teamed up with students from Duke-NUS Medical School to create an e-learning platform. This innovative approach allows employers to assess domestic workers’ progress after completing the online training modules. Advanced practice nurse Ms. Ang Kim Wai from SHP Tampines emphasized the importance of these sessions in managing chronic diseases. “The knowledge gained is vital for effectively handling conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure.”
The training doesn’t just stop at medical education; it also includes guidance on safe exercises tailored for the elderly, helping prevent falls and ensuring a safer environment for seniors.
Empowering Caregivers
Since completing the training, Ms. Rose's confidence has soared. Her employer, Seow Cheng Seng, noted a remarkable improvement in her caregiving abilities. With her newfound skills, Ms. Rose continues to implement healthier ingredients in Mrs. Seow’s diet, making a significant difference in managing her diabetes. Mr. Seow reflected, “This training is invaluable for helpers, particularly in challenging areas like dementia care.”
In a society where the aging population is growing, initiatives like those from SingHealth are not just beneficial; they are essential for empowering caregivers and enhancing the quality of life for elderly individuals. This is a powerful reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a little training to make a world of difference in someone's life.
