Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, an inspiring non-profit organization focused on enhancing the health of Islanders, is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking Live Well program. This initiative features a series of 12-week, interactive group courses aimed at helping individuals manage and even reverse metabolic syndrome through sustainable and scientifically-backed lifestyle changes. Thanks to the generous funding from the Jersey Community Foundation, this program is set to create a meaningful impact on public health by providing Islanders with practical tools for healthier living.

What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of health issues including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and insulin resistance, which significantly elevate the risk of serious conditions like heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Shockingly, it is estimated that approximately 20-30% of adults in Jersey are affected by this condition, often without realizing it. The Live Well program empowers participants to take charge of their health and stave off potentially devastating health complications down the line.

By adopting essential lifestyle modifications, such as improved nutrition, increased physical activity, and effective stress management, participants may significantly enhance their health outcomes—potentially managing or even reversing their conditions.

Dr. Jo Darwood, a dedicated Lifestyle Medicine Doctor and Director at Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, emphasizes the program’s focus on prevention and self-empowerment. “The Live Well courses are all about prevention and empowerment,” she says. “We’re addressing the root causes of metabolic syndrome, equipping individuals with the necessary tools and support to lead healthier, longer lives while minimizing their reliance on medications.”

Join the Movement: Registration Now Open!

The Live Well courses are set to commence in January 2025, and registration is currently open. These group sessions are specifically tailored for individuals already diagnosed or at risk of metabolic syndrome—those who exhibit at least two conditions such as being overweight, having high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, or pre-diabetes.

The courses will be facilitated by local certified lifestyle medicine professionals, Dr. Jo Darwood and Lauren Perchard-Rees, who boast over 40 years of collective healthcare experience and are dedicated to guiding participants toward better health while fostering a supportive community.

Sessions will be offered at various locations and times during the 12-week program, featuring core 60-90 minute sessions held bi-weekly. These sessions will delve into essential topics, including nutrition, physical movement, stress management, sleep hygiene, and the importance of social connections. For those looking to put knowledge into practice, optional hands-on sessions will be included to reinforce what was covered.

Sharing her experience from a recent pilot program, Ronni from St. Martin’s, who attended sessions focused on pre-diabetes, expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m so happy with my results, so motivated to embrace this way of living, and grateful for the opportunity to participate!”
