Incident Overview

In a heartbreaking incident at a worksite on Rifle Range Road, authorities have confirmed that no foul play is suspected following the tragic death of 31-year-old Ely Chow in December 2022. This incident, which unfolded while moving a nearly 900kg crimping machine, serves as a somber reminder of the dangers present in heavy machinery operations.

Details of the Incident

During a coroner's inquiry held on November 5, police detailed the events leading up to Mr. Chow's untimely death. It was revealed that he and his colleagues were instructed to relocate a large crimping machine within ST Engineering Advanced Material Engineering's site. This type of equipment is vital in various manufacturing processes where metal fittings are affixed to hose ends.

Circumstances and Response

According to Senior Staff Sergeant (SSS) Ng Tyan Soon, the group utilized a forklift to facilitate the move. Prior to the operation, the forklift driver, facing visibility challenges, requested Mr. Chow to check the area for any potential obstructions. The machine itself was secured within a box structure, complicating the lift.

At approximately 7:45 AM on December 27, 2022, Mr. Chow confirmed the area was clear. Unfortunately, as the forklift driver inserted the forks into the box and began to tilt the load for stability, it became apparent through CCTV footage that the forks were not adequately secured. The machine, characterized as “top-heavy,” abruptly tipped forward, impacting Mr. Chow on the forehead and pinning him down.

Medical Response and Aftermath

SSS Ng recounted the harrowing scene, stating that by the time help arrived, Mr. Chow was found propped against a wall, exhibiting signs of trauma including a swollen face and bleeding from the nose and mouth. Despite immediate medical attention at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, he was tragically pronounced dead at 9:03 AM.

Calls for Safety Measures

This incident encourages calls for increased safety measures and protocol enforcement in workplaces involving heavy machinery. Experts emphasize that comprehensive training and strict adherence to safety guidelines are essential to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

Community Mourning and Urgent Appeal

As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a young man whose life was cut short in a preventable accident. In light of this event, officials urge all employers and employees to prioritize safety above all else, continuously evaluate risks, and uphold stringent operational standards to safeguard the workforce.
