SINGAPORE – In a devastating incident that highlights ongoing safety concerns in the construction industry, a 46-year-old Thai worker lost his life after being struck by a concrete mixer truck at a work site on Marina East Drive on October 30.

This tragic event marks the seventh reported workplace death in Singapore within a span of just four months, shining a spotlight on the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.

Emergency Response

Emergency services responded promptly, but the worker was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The truck driver, a 41-year-old man, has since been arrested on charges of causing death by negligent act, as investigations into the accident continue.

Accident Details

According to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the accident occurred around 7:50 a.m. when the truck was entering the construction site for refuelling and collided with the worker, who was employed by Koh Kock Leong Enterprise—a civil engineering company that manages the site.

Safety Measures

In a proactive move, MOM has directed the company to halt all vehicular operations at the refuelling area where the incident occurred to prevent any further tragedies. The Ministry emphasized the importance of rigorous safety protocols, stating that companies must remind heavy vehicle drivers to remain vigilant, especially regarding their vehicle's blind spots.

Worrying Trends

This unfortunate incident is part of a worrying trend; statistics revealed by MOM indicate that vehicular incidents were the leading cause of workplace fatalities in Singapore, contributing to a total of at least 26 deaths in 2024 alone, with 19 workers reportedly losing their lives on the job in just the first half of this year.

Infrastructure Development and Safety

Since a significant rise in construction activity in the Marina East region—aimed at facilitating infrastructure development—focused attention has shifted toward safety. National Development Minister Desmond Lee confirmed in a parliamentary reply that such sites will continue to play a critical role in Singapore’s urban development, further emphasizing the need for stringent safety standards.

Workplace Safety Reminder

With the year nearing its end, the Workplace Safety and Health Council has issued a stern reminder to all construction firms to remain vigilant and ensure workers are equipped with the knowledge and resources to work safely. The council urged employers to foster a culture where employees feel empowered to report unsafe conditions, reinforcing that no deadline or festive occasion should compromise worker safety.

Legal Consequences

As investigations unfold, authorities warn that those convicted of negligence resulting in workplace fatalities could face up to two years in prison, fines, or both—making it critical for all in the industry to adhere to best practices and prioritize safety above all else.
