BALI – A wave of tragic events has unfolded on the picturesque island of Bali, with the death toll from recent floods skyrocketing to 14 individuals. As of September 11, authorities confirmed this grim increase, even as the torrential rains that triggered the disaster have subsided and water levels begin to recede.

In the capital city of Denpasar, two people remain unaccounted for, prompting a response from 125 dedicated rescuers deployed to locate them. Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the disaster mitigation agency, reported that over 500 residents have been evacuated to safe havens, including schools and mosques.

Widespread Destruction

The relentless downpour on September 9 and 10 unleashed floods across Denpasar and six of Bali's eight regions, severely obstructing major roadways and even halting access to the island's international airport. Additionally, a staggering 18 landslides were reported, further heightening the urgency of the situation.

Heartbreaking Loss of Life

Most fatalities occurred as individuals were swept away when rivers overflowed their banks. Fortunately, officials confirmed that no foreign tourists were among the casualties, and there were no flight cancellations reported on September 11.

The head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Suharyanto, stated that search operations for the missing persons are ongoing. Government teams are actively clearing debris and providing essential relief to evacuees. Rescuers are also diligently pumping water out of several inundated buildings, with around 500 military personnel mobilized to clear streets of mud, debris, and rocks.
