T.O.P Reflects on His Character Thanos
In an exclusive interview one month after the highly anticipated second season premiere of Netflix's acclaimed K-Drama "Squid Game," former BIGBANG member T.O.P, also known as Choi Seung Hyun in his acting career, shared intriguing insights about his character, Thanos. The iconic show has managed to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, and T.O.P's portrayal has certainly sparked conversation.
T.O.P reflected on the immense global attention surrounding both the series and his character. This marks the first occasion he has delved into the creative process behind Thanos, providing fans with a deeper understanding of his journey as an actor.
T.O.P Confronts the Criticism: Is His Acting Really that “Cringey”?
In his candid revelations, T.O.P addressed the critiques that his acting faced in "Squid Game 2," emphasizing the extensive collaboration with director Hwang Dong Hyuk. They painstakingly crafted Thanos’s character to evoke feelings of discomfort and uncertainty in viewers—an ambitious goal that seems to have paid off, considering the varied feedback on his performance.
“I engaged in numerous discussions with the director. My aim was to develop a character that was unique and hadn’t been seen before. I chose exaggerated gestures purposefully, to leave viewers questioning whether to find him annoying or merely cringey. It was crucial for them to sense an odd aura surrounding him,” T.O.P explained.
While reminiscing about one of Thanos's most "cringey" moments, T.O.P confessed that he had never rapped to impress a woman before. The scene in question required him to perform a rap in front of his co-star, Song Ji Woo, who plays Player 196, Kang Mi Na. This task pushed him outside of his comfort zone, making the filming process quite challenging.
“I’ve spent over two decades rapping, but I’ve never aimed my performance at a woman to get her attention. I felt like I was losing my mind during the filming of that particular scene,” he confessed.
Originally, the script included a longer rap full of intricate lines, but T.O.P took creative liberties. He opted for a shorter, more intuitive rap that fit his character’s vibe better. He explained, “I filmed a test video on my phone, then sat with the director to refine it. We decided to amp up the over-the-top gestures to maintain the chaotic energy of Thanos.”
Intriguingly, T.O.P aimed to keep the rap simple. “If Thanos came off as a skilled rapper, it wouldn’t align with the image of someone who’s merely trying to survive in the game. The awkwardness needed to shine through,” he added with a thoughtful expression.
As fans continue to scrutinize Thanos and his "cringey" moments, it’s clear that T.O.P’s journey in "Squid Game 2" goes beyond mere acting; it’s a testament to his growth as an artist willing to challenge himself and take bold risks. Will T.O.P’s acting career reach new heights in the future? Only time will tell!
