A groundbreaking study reveals that the trauma of abuse and neglect experienced by female elite gymnasts lingers long after their competitive days are over. Led by Natalie Barker-Ruchti, a sports science researcher at Örebro University in Sweden, these findings shed light on a troubling aspect of athletic life that has often been overlooked.
In her study, Barker-Ruchti conducted in-depth interviews with 19 former gymnasts aged 20 to 53, representing diverse backgrounds from four continents. The results uncovered a staggering 54 negative consequences stemming from their experiences in the sport.
Many participants shared haunting stories of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, and a pervasive guilt that extended to a reluctance to encourage their own children to take up gymnastics. Interestingly, while the majority of outcomes were negative, some individuals did report elements of personal growth—a testament to their resilience.
The research, now published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, underscores the need for a renewed focus on athlete welfare. Barker-Ruchti’s previous studies also highlighted a shift in attitudes towards abusive training practices, indicating a growing awareness within the sport.
"When I started my research 25 years ago, concepts such as abuse and violence in gymnastics were virtually absent from discussions," Barker-Ruchti stated. "Now, we have the language to articulate these experiences, enabling both current and former gymnasts to come forward and share their stories. This is a crucial prelude to real change."
Barker-Ruchti’s commitment to this cause will continue as she takes on a new role as an ethics specialist with the Swiss Olympic Committee, all while remaining an affiliated researcher at Örebro University.
"Understanding the gymnast's perspective has always been at the heart of my work," she remarked, emphasizing that her new position is an opportunity to further enhance the conditions for athletes across Switzerland. Equipped with a profound understanding of the psychological impact of their sport, she aims to catalyze transformative change for future generations.
