A Legacy of Deliciousness: From Grandfather to Grandson

Koh’s journey began long before he took over the family business. His grandfather once sold the beloved dish from a mobile stall at a staggering price of just three sen a plate! Years later, his father continued the tradition, cooking up plates of noodles for only 30 sen. Now, at 71, Koh proudly carries on this family legacy at his stall in Jalan Sungai Abong, serving the same delicious wok-fried noodles that have delighted generations.

Keeping Prices Low: A Mission Driven by Compassion

Koh’s motivation goes beyond profit; it’s a heartfelt wish to support others in the community, particularly those visiting the nearby specialist hospital. "Patients and their families already face so much stress; they shouldn’t have to worry about food expenses too," he shared.

From Meter Reader to Char Kway Teow Master

Before dedicating himself full-time to the family business 15 years ago, Koh worked as a meter reader for Tenaga Nasional Bhd. However, weekends and holidays were spent mastering the art of cooking alongside his father. The love for char kway teow runs deep in his veins, making him the third generation to keep the flames of this culinary tradition burning.

Facing Rising Costs but Staying True to Values

Despite the jump in prices for key ingredients like cockles—soaring from 80 sen per kilo to RM15 or RM16—Koh strives to maintain reasonable portion sizes. Cockles remain an optional add-on, catering to diverse customer preferences. Operating with his wife from 6 AM to noon every day, the couple avoids additional expenses by managing the stall entirely on their own.

With their children pursuing their own careers, Koh and his wife do not carry financial burdens and have no desire to chase after wealth. "I’m not in this for riches; I just want to offer good food at a price that people can afford," he explained. Amidst rising costs and economic uncertainties, Koh’s dining stall remains a beacon of hope and community spirit—where deliciousness meets compassion.
