In a dramatic turn of events, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has left Singapore after a brief stay for a health check-up. Reports confirm that Thaksin boarded his private jet and departed from Seletar Airport at 1:46 PM on September 8, arriving back in Bangkok just over an hour later.

This hasty return comes just before a pivotal ruling by Thailand’s Supreme Court regarding his detention in a hospital setting. Speculation runs high regarding whether Thaksin's six months under medical observation will count towards a significant jail sentence stemming from charges of abuse of power.

Thaksin, 76, initially left Thailand on September 5, hours before a parliamentary vote that would see Anutin Charnvirakul, a tycoon, ascend to the prime ministership, ousting Thaksin's daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. His motive for the Singapore trip was stated as a routine health check.

However, Thaksin faced unexpected challenges; Thai officials reportedly delayed his departure, causing his jet to miss the closing of Singapore’s airport for the night. In a twist, he diverted his flight to Dubai instead and announced plans to visit friends and doctors there before returning to Thailand.

Reiterating his intention to be in court on September 9, Thaksin emphasized the importance of facing the legal system personally amid swirling controversy. The Supreme Court's decision could reignite Thaksin's legal troubles, as he had been sentenced to eight years of imprisonment, which was later reduced by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Despite his sentence, he has spent no time in a prison cell, instead residing in a special medical unit due to health concerns.

Additionally, in August, he was acquitted of separate charges related to royal defamation, which subsequently lifted a travel ban that had been imposed on him. This latest legal upheaval has added further instability, especially following the dismissal of his daughter from office due to ethical breaches.

As Thaksin returns to Thailand amidst these escalating tensions, the political landscape remains charged. All eyes will be on the Supreme Court’s ruling and its implications for the Shinawatra family's future in Thai politics.
