The anticipation is building for the highly awaited "Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake,” as fans recall a time when role-playing games (RPGs) captured their imagination with epic quests and mythical creatures. One of the most iconic franchises in RPG history, Dragon Quest, originally by Enix, has been captivating players since 1986. With its roots planted firmly in Japan, thanks to the visionary work of Yuji Horii and character designer Akira Toriyama, Dragon Quest has become a staple in both Asian and American gaming cultures.

Among its many titles, none have left a more profound legacy than "Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation." Released in Japan on the Famicom and later brought to North America as "Dragon Warrior III" for the NES in 1988, this game set a high bar for its successors, garnering acclaim for expanding gameplay elements and crafting a richer experience for players.

Over the years, "Dragon Quest III" has seen its share of remakes, including a Super Famicom version in 1996 and a Game Boy Colour version in 2000, solidifying its status as one of the series' top-sellers, with over 7.5 million copies sold. Now, with the exciting "Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake," this beloved title is prepared to enchant a new generation of gamers with enhanced graphics and gameplay.

During an extensive two-hour preview at Tokyo Game Show 2024, we had the opportunity to sit down with game producer Masaaki Hayasaka to discuss the vision behind updating this classic for contemporary audiences. Hayasaka emphasized their primary goal: staying true to the original.

“Our general direction was to maintain the charm of the original while introducing elements that satisfy both longtime fans and new players,” Hayasaka articulated. This ideology is particularly noticeable in the overhaul to the graphics and art style. Drawing from their successful experience with 2018's "Octopath Traveler," Hayasaka and Team Asano are implementing the innovative HD-2D graphical style to breathe fresh life into the remake.

“From 'Octopath Traveler', we realized how effective the HD-2D style is for creating atmosphere,” he remarked. This unique blend of pixel art and detailed environmental graphics gives "Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake" an aesthetic appeal that harkens back to the past while inviting players into a convincingly vibrant world.

One of the most compelling changes has been the addition of depth and perspective in its environments, which have been meticulously crafted, sparking nostalgia in returning fans. However, this task was not without challenges, particularly in adapting the original map’s flat aesthetics to a three-dimensional visual style. Hayasaka and his team invested nearly two years into achieving this added layer of detail, underscoring their commitment to honoring the legacy of the original game.

Combat remains largely faithful to its roots, retaining elements that long-time players cherished, such as the first-person battle animation. Yet, the team also acknowledges the importance of accessibility, having included options to modify combat speeds, ensuring no player feels left behind.

Exciting new features await players, too, such as the introduction of Monster Arena battles. This feature will allow adventurers to capture wandering monsters across the game world and engage them in battles against NPCs, adding an engaging dimension to the core gameplay.

Interestingly, Hayasaka revealed a lessened sense of pressure during development, attributed to his fresh perspective on the game, having not played the original. Esteemed creator Yuji Horii's involvement as a scenario designer also provided guidance and reassurance. His direct participation has been a motivating force, amplifying the team's dedication to delivering a top-notch experience that resonates with both old fans and new players.

As Hayasaka expressed, “Working alongside Horii-san on a legendary franchise I’ve admired since before entering the industry has been a career highlight.” With a playful sense of responsibility looming, he concluded, “This is a legendary title, and if I mess this up, I might have to reconsider my career in this industry.”

With such heartfelt dedication and nostalgia wrapped in this remake, fans near and far are undoubtedly eager to dive back into the world of "Dragon Quest III" when it launches in the near future. Will it meet the high expectations set by its predecessor? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the legacy of Dragon Quest is far from over.
