In a dramatic turn of events on Thursday, November 7, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in eastern Indonesia erupted spectacularly, hurling a massive ash cloud into the sky and igniting fear among nearby residents.

Witnesses reported more than seven eruptions throughout the day, with the most significant explosion projecting an ash column an astounding 8 kilometers high. The scene was made even more surreal by the occurrence of volcanic lightning—a rare and frightful natural phenomenon—as terrified locals fled in panic.

The recent eruptions come on the heels of earlier volcanic activity at Lewotobi Laki-Laki, which resulted in the tragic loss of nine lives and prompted authorities to enforce a 7-kilometer exclusion zone around the volcano.

Many residents found themselves in a race against time to escape the potentially deadly situation. 'This is the first time I’ve seen such a colossal eruption since I’ve been living here,' said Anastasia Adriyani, a 41-year-old local.

Speaking from Lewolaga village—where she was busy cooking for evacuees—she recounted her harrowing experience: “I was terrified. When it erupted, I dashed back home, and all I could think was to get to safety.”

In response to the escalating volcanic activity, Indonesia's volcanology agency has raised the alert level for the twin-peaked mountain, which stands at 1,703 meters, to its highest tier.

Fortunately, reports from the region indicate no immediate structural damage to surrounding villages; however, the atmosphere was charged with fear as both adults and schoolchildren were seen hastily leaving their homes.
