Tencent Games Champions Green Initiatives

In a game-changing move for the gaming industry, Tencent Games, a powerhouse in game development and publishing, has officially joined the Playing for the Planet Alliance. Supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this alliance aims to minimize the environmental impact of gaming and inspire climate action through innovative gameplay.

Commitment to Sustainability

This partnership signifies Tencent's dedication to sustainable innovation and mirrors its ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its operations by 2030. Brent Irvin, Corporate Vice President at Tencent, emphasized the company's commitment to a greener gaming future, stating, "Joining the Alliance underscores our belief that video games can be a force for good and a powerful platform for paving the way to a greener future."

Leading by Example: Green Game Jam

Tencent is already collaborating with the alliance on its flagship project, the Green Game Jam. This initiative encourages game developers to create in-game experiences that motivate players to take action for the planet. A prime example is the forest-themed campaign launched in 2025 in 'Honor of Kings,' developed by TiMi Studio Group, which effectively engaged players in ecological conservation.

Exciting Initiatives on the Horizon

In 2024, Tencent's 'Carbon Island,' a carbon-neutral science game, along with 'PUBG MOBILE,' took part in the Green Game Jam. PUBG MOBILE’s 'Play for Green' campaign achieved global engagement with over 1.4 billion interactions, showcasing the effectiveness of gaming in promoting sustainability. This initiative even won the Media’s Choice Award at the Green Game Award 2024, highlighting its significant impact.

Educational Efforts and Future Goals

The launch of 'Carbon Island' in 2022 brought vital knowledge about emission reduction and ecological protection to the forefront, while 'Craz3 Match,' also a TiMi Studio project, educated players about the bond between humans and nature. Recognized for its efforts, Tencent won the First to Implement Award at the 2021 Green Game Jam.

Empowering Developers for a Greener Tomorrow

Looking ahead, Tencent Games plans to develop training programs aimed at equipping game developers with tools to embed sustainability into their projects. This includes fostering energy-efficient operations and eco-friendly game design, alongside exploring educational initiatives for university students.

The Call for Action from UNEP

Sam Barratt from UNEP noted, "The video games industry has the ability to engage, inspire, and captivate the imaginations of billions. Tampering with climate change necessitates collaboration with powerful partners like Tencent Games, and their commitment underscores the urgent need for collective action in building a sustainable future."
