SINGAPORE: On March 23, 2025, Singapore’s leaders commemorated the tenth anniversary of the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, the nation’s founding Prime Minister, with heartfelt tributes reflecting on his profound influence on Singapore's development.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong praised Mr. Lee's vision and leadership, emphasizing how he and his pioneering team overcame formidable challenges to lay the groundwork for a nation characterized by meritocracy and economic resilience. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Wong stated, “Singapore today stands as a living testament to his vision— a clean, green, and dynamic city-state that is admired and respected around the world.”

Wong encouraged Singaporeans to honor Lee Kuan Yew's legacy not merely through remembrance, but through meaningful action. "As we mark SG60 and chart our next chapter, let us forge a brighter future worthy of the foundation he laid," he stated.

During the solemn commemoration, Wong shared poignant imagery of thousands lining the streets, holding flags and umbrellas, recalling the state funeral procession that featured Lee’s coffin transported via gun carriage from the Parliament House to the University Cultural Centre. Despite the rainy weather on that fateful day in March 2015, Singaporeans united to pay their respects, as the procession wound its way through significant landmarks, covering a distance of 15.4 kilometers.

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in his tribute, spoke of the profound personal loss felt by his family and the entire nation, recalling Mr. Lee as a paternal figure. "To me and my family, he was our father or grandfather, and meant the world to us. May we live up to his hopes and expectations, and always do him proud," he shared.

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam noted the pivotal role played by Mr. Lee in shaping Singapore into a successful multiracial society. "We survived as a small nation and scaled new heights because of him and his team's vision," he remarked, underscoring the importance of each generation developing its own leaders and aspirations for the future.

He further emphasized the ongoing journey of living up to Mr. Lee’s legacy, stating that Singapore must continue to strive for a society that uplifts every citizen, enabling them to reach their full potential.

Reflecting on Lee Kuan Yew's illustrious political career, in which he served as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1990, his legacy remains firmly embedded in Singapore's identity. He was instrumental in founding the People's Action Party in 1954 and held various key leadership roles, serving his country until his passing in 2015 at the age of 91.

Over the past decade, Singapore has continued to evolve, yet the values instilled by Lee Kuan Yew—innovation, resilience, and unity—remain central to the nation’s narrative. As Singapore looks ahead, leaders are resolved to carry forward his vision, ensuring that his spirit continues to guide the nation in its future endeavors.
