Conquering Cervical Cancer Through Community Leadership
In an inspiring display of unity and strength, the Phulkari Women of Amritsar hosted the 8th annual Tealathon – a marathon dedicated to raising awareness about cervical cancer. This vibrant event took place at Dussehra Ground in Ranjit Avenue, and it marked a monumental occasion as the 150th awareness initiative led by the organization.
Record-Breaking Turnout for a Noble Cause
This year's Tealathon attracted over 2,000 participants, showcasing a diverse group of individuals ranging from a mere three years to 80 years old. This overwhelming turnout exemplifies the community’s commitment to combating cervical cancer and highlighting the importance of women's health.
A Campaign Rooted in Education and Action
Aligned with the national Teal Ribbon initiative, Tealathon aims to promote awareness about cervical cancer while advocating for preventive measures such as HPV vaccinations and routine screenings. Phulkari, a women-led social organization, is dedicated to empowering women to prioritize their cervical health by facilitating access to necessary screenings.
Impact Beyond Numbers: Real Lives Changed
"Tealathon began as an outreach activity under our Conquer Cancer campaign, and its impact has grown tremendously over the years. We've reached more than 600,000 people through our educational programs," shared Praneet Bubber, Founder of Phulkari WOA. The organization has successfully screened 1,418 women across 16 clinics, and provided vaccinations for 533 young girls. By focusing on one of the only preventable forms of cancer, Phulkari aims to ensure women benefit from early intervention.
Bringing Communities Together
The primary aim of this event was to unite individuals from various backgrounds to prioritize their health. Notable attendees included Congress MP Gurjeet Aujla and several professional marathoners from neighboring states like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
A Touching Moment for Inclusivity
Adding an emotional element to the race, 34 special needs children from Ibadat School and Karampura School of Eminence participated, both actively involved in the Phulkari Learning Program. Their inclusion highlights the event's commitment to embracing diversity and fostering community spirit.
Empowering Women Through Awareness
"Prevention and early detection are the two key pillars of our mission," stated Minakshi Khanna, President of Phulkari. "Cervical cancer is a serious health issue impacting women of all ages, and our goal is to provide the information and resources necessary to combat this disease effectively."
