KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 25 — In a recent victory for homeowners, 14 terrace house owners in Taman Desa have been awarded a staggering RM6 million by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) as compensation for land lost to the construction of Jalan Taman Bukit Desa.
This long-awaited payout brings closure to a contentious ongoing dispute that has drawn significant public attention.
The highest compensation went to Datuk Edmund Lim, who received nearly RM1 million.
Other homeowners saw their payouts range from RM350,000 to RM950,000, determined by the assessable size and market value of the affected land plots, according to The Star.
This situation escalated dramatically in 2022 when Lim took matters into his own hands by blocking a portion of the road to protest the ongoing issues with the land acquisition.
“I am relieved that this matter has finally been put to rest. While I would have preferred to get my land back, this compensation was the only viable solution,” he expressed, reflecting the sentiments of many affected residents.
The controversy originated from an error made by the housing developer, which resulted in a loss of 1,009 square feet of Lim’s property.
After extensive legal proceedings, DBKL confirmed the validity of the compensation payouts, adhering to the Land Acquisition Act of 1960, thereby concluding a long-standing battle for these homeowners.
This situation highlights ongoing challenges faced by residents in urban areas as urban development continues to clash with property rights.
The case of Taman Desa serves as a critical reminder of the importance of accurate land assessments and the need for transparent communication between developers and the residents they affect.
The resolution not only offers financial restitution but also hopes to restore harmony in the Taman Desa community moving forward.
