Civilization 7 Faces Tough Competition on Steam
Since its launch in February, Civilization 7 has had a rocky journey on Steam, struggling to attract players compared to its predecessors, Civilization 6 and even the veteran Civilization 5, which is 15 years old. With mixed reviews flooding in from users, it’s clear that Firaxis, the developer behind the game, has a significant task ahead in shifting player sentiment.
Zelnick's Optimism Amid Challenges
However, in a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed his excitement about Civilization 7, stating, "I'm thrilled with Civ 7 so far." He acknowledged the initial shortcomings but praised Firaxis for their diligent efforts to address these issues. Zelnick believes there’s still plenty of time for enhancements that will resonate with gamers, emphasizing the franchise's history of having a lengthy sales trajectory.
A History of Improvement and Player Loyalty
Zelnick noted that with each installment, changes often provoke anxiety among loyal fans, only for them to later appreciate the upgrades. "I think that’s what will happen here too," he asserted. He reiterated that while certain issues plagued the game's debut, they are being handled as ongoing improvements are made.
Civ 7's Unique Gameplay Features
Among the features that stirred some initial trepidation were the new Age Transition mechanics. Players will now navigate through Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern Ages, experiencing a simultaneous shift in each Age that allows for new civilization selection and legacy retention. This innovative approach is a first for the series, and Zelnick is confident that players will come to love these changes in due course.
Future Prospects and Expanding Horizons
While Take-Two has yet to release specific sales figures for Civilization 7, they have indicated plans to broaden its audience. This includes an exciting VR adaptation for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, alongside a future port for the Nintendo Switch 2. With this broadening scope, Civilization 7 might just find its footing in the competitive gaming landscape.
