Taiwan Rocks as a Mighty Quake Strikes!

TAIPEI: In a startling geological event, a magnitude 6 earthquake rattled the sea off Taiwan's northeast coast on Wednesday night (Aug 27). Fortunately, initial reports indicate no damage has occurred.

The jolt was strong enough to sway buildings in the bustling capital of Taipei, sending residents scrambling for safety. With the epicenter located approximately 20 kilometers offshore from Yilan County and a substantial depth of 112 kilometers, the quake was significant yet surprisingly non-destructive.

Feeling the tremors was not limited to Taipei; nearby cities like Taoyuan, Keelung, and Yilan also reported shaking. In response, the Taiwan Meteorological Agency issued a national alert around 9 PM local time, emphasizing the quake's impact in northern regions.

Amidst the seismic uncertainty, TSMC, the world's leading contract chip manufacturer, reassured stakeholders that its facilities on Taiwan’s western coast remained safe and did not require any evacuations.

Located near the converging edges of two major tectonic plates, Taiwan is no stranger to seismic activity. The island’s history has seen devastating earthquakes, including a tragic incident in 2016 that claimed over 100 lives and a catastrophic 1999 quake that resulted in more than 2,000 fatalities.

As Taiwan continues to navigate its earthquake-prone landscape, the resilience of its infrastructure and community is constantly tested, but for now, the island breathes a sigh of relief.
