SINGAPORE: In a delightful escape from the political hustle, Workers’ Party (WP) Member of Parliament (MP) Sylvia Lim recently shared that she and her husband, renowned footballer Quah Kim Song, enjoyed a short honeymoon together. The couple tied the knot earlier this year after a decade-long relationship, and Lim captured their romantic getaway in an Instagram post this week.
“Following our wedding in January and the recent parliamentary budget session, it was important for us to spend quality time together before the expected busy months ahead,” Ms. Lim explained. This statement hints at the impending General Election (GE), which is required to occur before November 23. Although the official dates for the campaign and voting have not been confirmed, speculation suggests that they will likely materialize by mid-year.
In her post, Ms. Lim included two photographs: one of the couple amidst the serene backdrop of cherry blossoms, and another in front of a sign stating, “Welcome to YUYUPAS.” This picturesque location is part of the YuYuPas Tsou Cultural Tribe Park in Chiayi County, Taiwan, a stunning attraction that spans two hectares and is famous for its exquisite tea gardens showcasing alpine oolong tea.
At the notable age of 60, Ms. Lim commemorated her birthday recently and married the 72-year-old Quah on January 4 at the Church of St Mary of the Angels, in an intimate ceremony that gathered around 40 of their closest family members.
Their honeymoon sparked a flurry of congratulatory remarks from followers, with many comments reflecting encouragement for Ms. Lim's upcoming political endeavors. One user remarked, “Congratulations! Here’s to a ‘David versus Goliath’ battle. May David come out on top!” Another added, “Cantik Bibik (beautiful aunt) Sylvia!! & Brother Song!! You truly deserve this break before the ‘Best’ is to come for all Singaporeans!!”
As a political figure, Ms. Lim has made significant strides since joining the WP in 2001, shortly following the General Election that year. Quickly rising through the ranks, she became the chairwoman of the party within 18 months. Her impressive political journey includes serving as a Non-Constituency MP from 2006 to 2011, leading to her historic victory at Aljunied GRC, where her party became the first opposition group to secure control.
Alongside WP Chief Pritam Singh and party vice-chair Faisal Manap, Ms. Lim has been a steadfast representative for Aljunied in Parliament since 2011, continuing to advocate for her constituents.
Quah Kim Song, a beloved figure in Singapore’s sports community, is celebrated not only for his skills as a striker but also for his memorable contributions to local football history, most notably during the exhilarating 1977 Malaysia Cup Final. As he and Sylvia embark on this new chapter of their lives, fans and friends alike eagerly anticipate both their personal and professional journeys ahead.
