In an electrifying turn of events at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, Mongolian ozeki Hoshoryu clinched his second Emperor's Cup and is set for promotion to yokozuna after an exhilarating three-way championship playoff. This victory secures his place as the sole grand champion of the sport following the mid-tournament retirement of Terunofuji, a ten-time Emperor's Cup winner known for his storied career marred by injuries.

The 25-year-old Hoshoryu, who is the nephew of legendary yokozuna Asashoryu, secured his title at the prestigious Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in Tokyo. The tournament wrapped up in dramatic fashion as No. 3 maegashira Oho and No. 14 maegashira Kinbozan were forced into a tiebreaker after finishing the tournament with identical records of 12-3.

In a nail-biting finish, Hoshoryu first overpowered Kotozakura, a fellow ozeki, who was already facing threats to maintain his rank as a “kadoban” ozeki due to a disappointing 5-10 record. Once in the playoff, Hoshoryu displayed his remarkable skill and adaptability, decisive against Kinbozan, using his superior positioning to push him out of the ring with relative ease.

The second playoff match proved to be a tougher challenge, where Oho put up a strong defensive hold, preventing Hoshoryu from gaining his preferred grip. However, in a display of strength and technique, Hoshoryu managed to shift Oho's balance significantly and force him out, sealing his victory and the championship title.

Hoshoryu’s aspirations for the prestigious yokozuna title have been evident throughout his recent performances, including a commendable 13-2 finish at the November tournament. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed determination: "On the last day of the previous tournament, I promised myself that I would really get it done this time at the January tournament."

Meanwhile, Kinbozan made headlines as he aimed to become the first wrestler from Kazakhstan to claim a championship in the elite makuuchi division, with notable wins that had fans rallying behind him. Oho, grandson of former yokozuna Taiho, also showcased potential with impressive performances, and appears on the brink of promotion to the three sanyaku ranks just below yokozuna.

Sekiwake Daieisho demonstrated resilience with an 11-4 record, while komusubi Abi and Wakatakakage, both with 7-8 records, will drop from sanyaku as the next tournament approaches.

As for Terunofuji, his unexpected retirement shook the sumo world as he faced yet another injury setback. Fans worldwide now anticipate the Japan Sumo Association’s Yokozuna Deliberation Council meeting, where Hoshoryu's promotion will be examined—a potentially monumental step for both the wrestler and the sport itself.

Stay tuned as we follow Hoshoryu’s thrilling journey to yokozuna and the unfolding stories in the world of sumo wrestling!
