In the world of interior design, there are rare occasions when a designer is granted the freedom to fully express their creativity and vision. Such was the case for renowned designer Eddie Lee, who was commissioned to breathe new life into a picturesque 18th-century weekend cottage nestled in the serene countryside of Bedford, New York.
“This project was truly a dream come true,” Lee remarked. “The clients really encouraged me to let loose and make a space that felt unique and personalized, especially since it was meant for weekend getaways.”
Spanning over 200 acres, this stunning cottage is anything but ordinary. Lee collaborated closely with contractor Jim Best, undertaking a significant interior renovation. Together, they transformed cramped spaces into an open-concept living area, maximizing the use of light and space while retaining the home’s historical charm. Outdated linoleum floors were replaced by wide plank pine, while original beams and a staircase added character to the refreshed design.
One of the standout features of the home is the welcoming bar area located in the living space, showcasing antique English armchairs dressed in luxurious Dedar fabric. Lee expertly navigated the challenges posed by a smaller space and low ceilings by focusing on the materials used in the furnishings, ensuring a sophisticated yet cozy atmosphere.
To create a sense of continuity throughout the home, Lee adorned the walls with grasscloth wallcovering in a soft hue from Phillip Jeffries. This design choice, complemented by Roman shades from Hunter Douglas, adds elegance without overwhelming the space with heavy curtains. “Everywhere you look, there’s a seamless flow,” Lee explained. “The colors and textures together create a beautiful, glowing ambiance.”
Known for his eye for eclectic design, Lee incorporated a mix of antique and vintage pieces predominantly sourced from England, reflecting his appreciation for the timeless charm of an English country house that evolves with each generation. The kitchen radiates joy and warmth, adorned with delightful pendants and sconces from Visual Comfort, alongside cabinetry in a cheerful Spiced Apple Cider shade from Benjamin Moore.
Upstairs, Lee maintained the traditional room layouts while adding character to the sloped ceilings of the bedrooms. Surprisingly, he emphasizes that patterned wallpaper—contrary to popular belief—can enhance the perception of space, making rooms feel lighter and more inviting.
In the primary bedroom, floral wallpaper by Schumacher sets the tone, with complementary colors used for the window trim and the ceiling, creating a cohesive and comfortable retreat. The nearby twin bedroom draws inspiration from a vibrant coral and green floral pattern, while the whimsical "bird room" is brought to life with an enchanting aviary print.
Through each detail—from the bold color choices to the carefully selected furnishings—Lee’s transformation of this historic cottage evokes a playful, vacation-like feel. “My goal was to create a space that feels joyful, where every visit feels like a celebration,” he concluded. With its stunning upgrades and thoughtful design, this Bedford cottage is sure to provide countless cherished memories for years to come.
