In a breathtaking display of nature's wonders, photographer Osama Fathi has immortalized the Perseid meteor shower as it streaks across the Milky Way, all while framing the ruins of an ancient Egyptian temple dedicated to the crocodile god, Soknopaios.

Capturing the Magic of the Night

Fathi captured this remarkable sight on the night of August 12 from the Soknopaiou Nesos archaeological site, located near Qarun Lake in northeastern Egypt. While this year's Perseid shower peaked under a waning gibbous moon, which overshadowed many meteors, Fathi managed to seize the brilliance of the few that pierced through, creating a stunning visual experience.

Ancient Heritage Meets Celestial Wonders

Commenting on his experience, Fathi shared, "Despite the moonlight, we captured some striking meteors soaring over the ancient ruins of Soknopaiou Nesos, known in modern times as Dimeh es-Seba, nestled in the Faiyum Oasis." His photograph not only showcases the meteors but also highlights the mystical landscapes of Egypt’s past.

Echoes of a Powerful Religious Hub

Founded in the 3rd century BCE during the Ptolemaic era, Soknopaiou Nesos was once a significant religious hub, housing a grand temple for Soknopaios, the oracular god with a crocodile’s body and a falcon’s head. This incredible fusion of celestial and ancient marvels tells a story of reverence that resonates throughout history.

Technical Brilliance Behind the Capture

Fathi's masterpiece is a composite of multiple exposures taken with a Nikon Z6 camera and a Nikkor 14-24 mm wide-angle lens. The ethereal glow of the Milky Way was captured over a 25-second exposure, while the luminous meteors required shorter exposures at a high ISO of 8000, showcasing both skill and artistry.
