SINGAPORE – In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have formalized eight Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) covering critical areas such as civil service training, social development, and artificial intelligence (AI). This milestone was marked during the two-day official visit of Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which commenced on October 29.
Upon his arrival, Sheikh Khaled received a grand ceremonial welcome and engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The two leaders reaffirmed their countries' warm friendship and shared interests, emphasizing their roles as regional hubs committed to a rules-based international order. "We have much to gain by strengthening our links and learning from each other’s experiences," Wong stated.
Discussions included a range of pressing topics such as geopolitics, clean energy initiatives, tourism, and museum programming. Both leaders expressed their commitment to enhancing collaboration through the Abu Dhabi-Singapore Joint Forum, focusing on sharing knowledge in public administration, climate mitigation, and clean energy solutions.
A highlight of the visit was the signing of the eight MOUs, which included agreements between Singapore's public service institutions and their UAE counterparts aimed at fostering expertise exchange. Notably, the pacts extended to civilian nuclear cooperation and the development of AI talent, as well as agreements to bolster cooperation in arbitration and dispute resolution.
Additionally, an MOU was signed between Seviora Holdings, an asset management company linked to Temasek, and Mubadala Capital, Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund, aimed at exploring global investment opportunities. Such collaborations are expected to yield substantial benefits for both nations in various sectors.
During his first official visit to Singapore, Sheikh Khaled will tour several crucial locations, including the Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre, where innovative public-private partnerships are showcased, as well as the Singapore City Gallery and popular attractions like Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay. His itinerary also includes a visit to the operations of chipmaker GlobalFoundries.
A state luncheon hosted by PM Wong is scheduled for October 30, further marking this historic diplomatic engagement. As both nations gear up to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic ties next year, discussions around deepening their relationship are set to continue. What does the future hold for this thriving partnership? Only time will tell!
