Tottenham Hotspur's dismal performance led them to a crushing 4-2 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, marking their fourth loss in six Premier League clashes and intensifying the pressure on coach Ange Postecoglou.
With West Ham United suffering a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, Wolves capitalized on their rivals' misfortune, climbing to 16th place in the standings with 35 points—just ahead of West Ham on goal difference and a comfortable 14 points clear of the relegation zone.
While Wolves played with urgency and aggression, Spurs appeared disjointed. Individual errors proved disastrous, contributing to all four Wolves goals and leaving Spurs just two points above their opponents in 15th position.
"I thought we were well in the game and controlled it really well, but we just kept conceding really poor goals," Postecoglou lamented after the match.
The disastrous start for Spurs came within the first two minutes, when goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made a weak punch that allowed Rayan Aït-Nouri to score with a precise shot, sending Wolves into the lead.
Things escalated for Vicario as he misjudged another save just before halftime, parrying the ball against defender Djed Spence, which resulted in an own goal.
Spurs managed to pull one back in the 59th minute through Mathys Tel, who capitalized on a defensive lapse by Nélson Semedo. However, hope was short-lived; just five minutes later, Cristian Romero's blunder gifted another goal to Wolves, as Aït-Nouri set up Jorgen Strand Larsen for an easy finish.
Richarlison attempted to spark a late comeback with a close-range header in the 85th minute, but once again, Spurs shot themselves in the foot. A careless mistake from Lucas Bergvall allowed Matheus Cunha to seal the deal with Wolves' fourth goal.
Postecoglou reflected, "Funny old game—though the performance wasn't too bad, the goals we conceded made it incredibly difficult for us overall." As Wolves fans sang about his potential sacking, the disheartened Spurs supporters expressed their frustration loudly.
Looking ahead, Postecoglou focused on the upcoming Europa League quarterfinal second leg. "They're clearly not happy—and they shouldn't be; we're not happy either," he acknowledged. "What we can do now is recover and prepare for Thursday."
