SpaceX Launches 20 New Starlink Satellites

In a remarkable display of engineering prowess, SpaceX successfully launched another batch of its innovative Starlink satellites today, September 20, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The Falcon 9 rocket shot into the foggy morning sky at 9:50 a.m. EDT (1350 GMT, 6:50 a.m. local California time) carrying 20 Starlink craft, aimed at further extending the company's global internet coverage.

Successful Recovery of Falcon 9

In an impressive feat, the Falcon 9's first stage made a controlled descent back to Earth, landing precisely on the SpaceX drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You," stationed in the Pacific Ocean. This successful recovery marks the 13th flight and landing for this particular booster, showcasing SpaceX's ability to reuse rocket components effectively. Intriguingly, ten of those missions were dedicated solely to deploying Starlink satellites.

Starlink's Expanding Reach

As of now, SpaceX has launched an astounding total of over 7,000 satellites into low Earth orbit as part of its expanding Starlink initiative. Notably, over 6,300 of these satellites are currently operational, providing vital high-speed internet access to millions across the globe, particularly in underserved regions.

Direct-to-Cell Satellite Technology

A noteworthy highlight from today’s launch is that thirteen of the newly deployed Starlink satellites are equipped with the capability to deliver internet service directly to cellphones.
