SoundCloud's Surprising Move: AI Training on User Content Now Allowed!

In a surprising policy shift, SoundCloud now permits the training of artificial intelligence using audio uploaded by its users. This change, quietly implemented, has raised eyebrows within the tech community.

Notably highlighted by tech ethicist Ed Newton-Rex, the revised terms of use, last updated on February 7, now state that users grant SoundCloud permission to use their content to "inform, train, [or] develop" AI technologies. The new wording casts a wide net over the potential use of uploaded material for AI purposes.

However, there's a caveat! Content bound by separate agreements—like those with record labels—can be shielded from this policy. SoundCloud has partnerships with various indie labels as well as major players like Universal Music and Warner Music Group.

Interestingly, it seems users may have little control over this new direction—TechCrunch couldn't locate any option for opting out of such AI training in SoundCloud's web settings. Despite inquiries, SoundCloud has remained tight-lipped.

Like many large platforms catering to creators, SoundCloud is diving further into AI. Last year, they collaborated with multiple vendors to introduce AI-driven tools for remixing, vocal generation, and custom sample creation. SoundCloud reassured users that rights holders would receive due credit and compensation, promising to uphold ethical AI practices.

This trend isn’t unique to SoundCloud; other platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and YouTube, have updated their policies to allow for AI training on user-generated content. These changes have sparked backlash from users who argue for an opt-in approach and demand recognition and payment for their contributions.

As the world of AI continues to evolve, the conversation around creator rights and ethical practices is more crucial than ever.
