In a surprising twist, SoundCloud found itself facing user outrage after AI expert Ed Newton-Rex, founder of Fairly Trained, revealed that the platform's terms of service had quietly evolved in February 2024 to potentially allow the use of user music for AI purposes. This alarming update ignited concerns about how SoundCloud might exploit artists' content.

Responding promptly, SoundCloud issued a statement clarifying the situation. The streaming giant insists, "SoundCloud has never used artist content to train AI models, nor do we develop AI tools or permit third parties to utilize our platform for AI training purposes." They emphasized that the recent terms change was solely intended to outline how artists' content interacts with AI technologies within SoundCloud's environment, such as personalized recommendations and fraud detection.

SoundCloud has a history of collaborating with AI firms, notably acquiring Musiio, an AI music curation company, in 2022. However, the company reassured users that tools like Musiio are focused strictly on artist discovery and not on training generative AI models.

While SoundCloud hasn't ruled out the possibility of using user-generated content for AI training in the future, they made it clear that no such occurrences have happened yet. "If we ever consider using user content for AI purposes, we will ensure transparent opt-out mechanisms are in place," they stated. This commitment illustrates their dedication to keeping creators informed and involved.

SoundCloud's detailed statement emphasized their priority: empowering artists with control and transparency. They aim to harness AI responsibly to enhance the artistic experience, whether by refining music recommendations or improving content organization.

In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, SoundCloud remains focused on maintaining open communication with its user base. As they explore innovative uses of AI, the company pledges to prioritize ethical standards and respect for artists’ rights.
