In a surprising turn of events, Chiangk Mai and Mae Hong Son have been shaken by a series of sixteen small tremors, registering between 1.9 and 3.8 on the Richter scale this Monday morning. Although the seismic activity spanned a period from 4:22 AM to 10:57 AM, most residents reported minimal disturbance from these quakes.
According to the Earthquake Observation Division, the majority of the quakes were concentrated in the tambon Saen Hai area of Wiang Haeng district in Chiang Mai, where ten tremors ranging from magnitudes 1.9 to 3.5 were detected. Meanwhile, six quakes were recorded in tambon Wiang Nuea of Pai district, with the most significant tremor registering at 3.8 around 6:11 AM.
Despite the frequency of the tremors, only three of the shakes—between magnitudes 3.2 and 3.8—were notably felt by local residents. This raises questions about the psychological impact of such seismic activity, as many may remain unaware of the ongoing geological events around them.
In light of these tremors, government spokesman Jirayu Huangsub provided updates regarding the structural integrity of local buildings. He addressed recent tremors related to the March 28 earthquake in Myanmar, which caused damage to three buildings in Chiang Mai. Notably, the Duangkamol condominium, an eight-storey structure built over three decades ago, showed severe distortion and structural cracks on the first floor. As a precaution, the building was evacuated and cordoned off. Public works officials are working closely with the property owner to initiate necessary repairs.
Additionally, two nearby 22-storey condominiums were reported to have only sustained superficial damage. They too will remain evacuated until further assessments can ensure the safety of residents.
This recent seismic activity is a reminder to stay informed and prepared, as experts note that tremors can be unpredictable. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety protocols and consider emergency preparedness plans to ensure the safety of their families.
Stay tuned for more updates on seismic activities in the region, as local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely!
