SINGAPORE - Brace yourselves, travel enthusiasts! Starting November 1, getting to Europe and the US via Singapore Airlines just got a lot more expensive in terms of KrisFlyer miles.

In a surprising move, the beloved flag carrier revealed on August 25 that frequent flyers will face a hike of 5% to 20% in the number of miles required to redeem air tickets or upgrade seats on select flights. But don’t fret just yet—there’s a shiny new option called 'Access' that promises to offer more ways to secure your dream seat.

Increased Redemption Rates: What's Changing?

Effective November 1, the miles needed for various flight redemptions will see a noticeable spike. Specifically, Advantage award rates across all zones and cabin classes—excluding Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey—will rise by 10% to 15%. For those traveling to the latter destinations, expect increases of 5% for economy, 18% for business, and 15% for first class.

However, it's not all doom and gloom! If you're planning to fly within Asia and the south-west Pacific, you'll be pleased to know that miles for Economy Saver awards will decrease by 5%. This is a silver lining for those looking to explore this region.

Lock in Current Rates Before Nov 1!

Good news for savvy planners: any redemption bookings confirmed and ticketed before November 1 will still honor the current rates. So, if you’ve been eyeing a seat, now is the time to act!

What's New with the Access Option?

In addition to the mile increase, Singapore Airlines is launching the 'Access' redemption option alongside regular award seats. This new choice aims to provide members with even more opportunities to secure their preferred flights.

The airline warns that mile requirements for the Access option will fluctuate based on seat demand throughout the year, keeping things interesting for loyal travelers.

Earning Status Credits Just Got Easier!

Starting September 1, KrisFlyer members can boost their status by earning points not only through flights but also when shopping and dining in Singapore and Australia, thanks to the new lifestyle rewards app, Kris+. These points, aptly named Status Credits, can also be accumulated while shopping at KrisShop and booking travel experiences through SIA’s Pelago platform.

Mr. Bryan Koh, SIA's divisional vice-president of loyalty marketing, emphasized that this enhanced redemption structure creates numerous opportunities for members to qualify for or renew their tiered status and secure those coveted travel seats.
