Revolutionizing Public Security: The Future of Policing in Singapore

SINGAPORE – In a groundbreaking move, Singapore's Protective Security Command (ProCom) has unveiled a dynamic new police unit equipped with advanced off-road vehicles and drones to enhance public safety. These cutting-edge tools will enable officers to swiftly respond to incidents, even in the most challenging environments.

Officially launched on June 22, the Strategic Location Response (SLR) teams aim to bolster the Singapore Police Force's (SPF) rapid response capabilities to a variety of security threats, from potential terrorism to other emergencies.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Victor Ho emphasized, "Our officers will be patrolling high-traffic areas including shopping centers and tourist attractions to proactively deter and react to any security risks."

High-Tech Vehicles and Gear: Designed for Maximum Efficiency

The newly appointed SLR officers are the first to wield innovative drones and counter-drone technology, featuring handheld drone jammers. These state-of-the-art Land Rover Defender 110 vehicles are tailored to fit the demanding needs of the unit, with modifications that include 360-degree camera systems, multiple airbags, and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

In collaboration with the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), ProCom has ensured SLR officers are outfitted with portable drone jammers that neutralize unauthorized drone activities. These jammers effectively disrupt the communication link between drones and their operators.

Equipped with submachine guns and reinforced with bulletproof vests and helmets, these officers are ready to tackle security challenges head-on as they patrol vital public spaces.

A Response to Evolving Security Threats

Assistant Commissioner Ho explained, "The creation of SLR teams responds directly to the shifting landscape of security threats we face today. Their aerial surveillance and counter-drone capabilities will significantly enhance our ground response efforts during critical incidents."

As the unit's operational commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Jaslyn Lee noted, "The new off-road vehicles provide much more space for equipment and personnel in tactical gear, along with the high ground clearance needed to tackle obstacles effectively."

Drones in Action: A Showcase of Skills

Demonstrating their capabilities, a team of SLR officers partook in a simulated exercise at ProCom headquarters on June 22. Using drones outfitted with cameras, officers tracked the movements of a mock 'gunman,' successfully locating him using thermal imaging. An officer also showcased the effective use of a drone jammer to disable a rogue drone.

ProCom, established in 2016, remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard strategic locations and events both in peacetime and during nationwide emergencies. With these revolutionary enhancements, the future of public security in Singapore looks brighter and more resilient than ever.
