A Wave of Altruism

SINGAPORE – A wave of altruism is sweeping through Singapore, as more individuals are stepping up to uplift the lives of others, creating a renewed sense of hope for the future. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam recently shared this sentiment, highlighting the essential role that compassion and community play in the nation's strength.

President's Reflection

In a heartfelt New Year message posted on social media on December 31, President Tharman reflected on his 15-month journey as the country's president since his election in September 2023. He expressed profound optimism for Singapore’s future, fueled by inspiring stories of kindness and selflessness.

Mark Eli Fernando's Heroic Act

Among the stories he shared is that of 15-year-old Mark Eli Fernando, who acted heroically when alerted to a cardiac arrest incident by the Singapore Civil Defence Force's myResponder app. This community tool empowers citizens to respond to emergencies in their vicinity. Relying on his Scouts training, Mark rushed to the scene, where he found an unconscious man. Demonstrating immense courage, he retrieved an automated external defibrillator (AED) and, along with bystanders, was able to save the man's life. President Tharman emphasized Mark's uniqueness not only stems from being a student at Pathlight School but also from his autism, highlighting that his dedication to helping others has made a tangible difference.

Dr. Ain Azman's Commitment

President Tharman also honored Dr. Ain Azman, a dedicated youth mentor at Tasek Academy and Social Services. Initially volunteering her weekends, Dr. Ain found such fulfillment in her role that she transitioned to full-time work, impacting the lives of young, disadvantaged individuals. Her innovative approach—integrating football into her mentorship—allows her to connect with her charges on multiple levels, fostering self-esteem and ambition among the youth. With her background in biomedical engineering, Dr. Ain's decision to pursue a path in social services shows her commitment to what she finds meaningful, benefitting both herself and the community.

Madam Jenny Wong's Dedication

Lastly, the president spotlighted the incredible dedication of 65-year-old Madam Jenny Wong, who has devoted over 1,200 hours to volunteering within public libraries and hospitals. By accompanying patients to various activities and providing empathetic listening, she exemplifies the spirit of community service that enriches lives. Her commitment highlights how individual actions, no matter how small, can create monumental impacts.

A Collective Commitment to Service

Together, the inspiring actions of Mark, Dr. Ain, and Madam Jenny showcase how ordinary residents can become beacons of hope and purpose within their neighborhoods. President Tharman concluded with a powerful reminder: "The strength of our nation lies in the strength and purpose we add to each other’s lives.”

Embracing Hope in the New Year

As Singapore welcomes the new year, the nation stands united in a collective commitment to service, reminding all of us about the difference one person can make in the life of another. Who knows how many more unsung heroes are out there ready to make an impact? Keep an eye on the community around you; your next act of kindness could spark a wave of hope!
